In Lalmati, Comilla, a speech-impaired young woman was allegedly gang-raped after being lured with the promise of buying chips. The incident has sparked outrage, with one elderly man already arrested and police actively searching for another suspect. The victim’s father filed a case at Lalmati Police Station on Thursday night, naming two individuals in the rape complaint.

 

Incident Details
The incident occurred around 8:00 AM on Thursday in an under-construction building’s labor quarters in Pohan Kucha village, Bagmara South Union, Lalmati Upazila. Police rescued the speech-impaired young woman and sent her to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a medical examination.

Lalmati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Himadri Khisa confirmed the incident, stating, “The victim’s father is a tea seller. After the incident, there was an attempt to hush up the matter. However, when the father informed the police, they acted swiftly and arrested one suspect. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other individual involved.”

Case Details
The two accused named in the case are Md. Jahangir (50), son of late Arab Ali, and Bahar Mia (50), son of late Rajab Ali, both residents of Pohan Kucha village in Bagmara South Union, Lalmati Upazila.

Following the complaint, police conducted a raid and arrested the primary accused, Md. Jahangir. He was sent to jail through a court order on Friday. Police are currently conducting raids to arrest the second accused, Bahar Mia.

Victim’s Family Statement
The speech-impaired victim’s aunt provided a detailed account of the incident, saying, “My niece is physically and speech-impaired. She goes for a walk near our house every morning. On Thursday, around 7:30 AM, she left home, and Jahangir took her to Dulal’s shop by the road, promising to buy her chips. Later, he took her to a labor quarters in an under-construction building. When I learned about this, I went to the quarters around 8:00 AM and found Jahangir and Bahar Mia forcibly raping her. I slapped Bahar Mia, after which both of them fled the scene.”

Police Statement
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalmati Police Station, Md. Shah Alam, said, “A case has been filed regarding the gang rape of the speech-impaired young woman. The primary accused has been arrested, and the victim has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a medical examination. We are making every effort to arrest the second accused.”

The incident has sparked widespread anger and condemnation in the community. Human rights organizations have demanded a thorough investigation and swift justice for the perpetrators. Local residents have called on the administration to strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
