Mentally Challenged Young Woman Gang-Raped in Sylhet

A shocking incident of gang rape involving a mentally challenged young woman has been reported in the Airport Thana area of Sylhet city. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the crime, which has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation locally.

 

The incident occurred on Tuesday around 10:30 AM in the Chhara Gang Rubber Garden area under the jurisdiction of Airport Thana. The two arrested suspects have been identified as Rakib Mia (25), son of Anwar Hossain from Dalui Para in Shahporan Thana, and Abdur Rahim, son of Hasem Mia from Gol Pirer Bazar in Uttar Mokam under the same Thana.

According to police sources, upon receiving information about the gang rape, officers rushed to the scene and rescued the victim. She was immediately taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for medical treatment and admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Center.

Speaking to Dhaka Post, the victim’s (mentally challenged young woman) father recounted the harrowing details: “In the morning, I received a call from my daughter’s phone. The caller informed me that she was found in a bloodied state in a tea garden area and requested help to rescue her. Later, the police from Sylhet Airport Thana contacted us, and we rushed to Osmani Hospital to be by her side.”

Mentally Challenged Young

The mentally challenged young woman’s father further revealed that his daughter has been suffering from mental health issues and has been undergoing treatment for a long time. She had gone missing from home four days prior to the incident, and despite extensive searches, her family had been unable to locate her. The father demanded strict punishment for those involved in the crime.

Confirming the incident, Saiful Islam, Additional Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, told Dhaka Post, “After the incident, the victim (mentally challenged young girl) was admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Center at MAG Osmani Hospital for treatment. Upon receiving a verbal complaint from the victim’s family, police launched an investigation. Two suspects were arrested around 10 PM, and during preliminary interrogation, they confessed to their involvement. Legal proceedings are currently underway.”

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from local communities and human rights organizations. Analysts believe that such brutality against a mentally challenged individual reflects a deep moral decay within society.
