Tensions remain high in Malda’s Mothabari area following violent clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups, with allegations of targeted attacks on Hindu-owned shops and residences. While police claim the situation is now under control, an undercurrent of unease persists.
Violence Erupts in Mothabari
On March 27, clashes erupted between two groups in Mothabari, Malda. Locals allege that Hindu properties were deliberately attacked, with reports of 60-70 shops and homes vandalized. Disturbing videos circulating online show mobs marching with flags before ransacking businesses.
Police Crackdown and Arrests
Malda district police have taken strict action, arresting 34 individuals linked to the violence. Six cases have been filed, with some accused of direct involvement while others allegedly inciting unrest. Additional forces have been deployed, with 25 police pickets set up in sensitive areas and seven mobile units patrolling.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid rumors and provocative actions, warning against spreading misinformation on social media.
Political Backlash
The BJP has condemned the attacks, with state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of failing Hindus. In a social media post, Majumdar claimed, “Hindu shops were looted, homes attacked, and temples vandalized while police remained absent.” He alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “appeasement policies” are endangering Hindus and accused her of pushing a “Greater Bangladesh” agenda.
TMC MLA Sabina Yasmin, however, asserted that the administration is vigilant and called for calm. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari echoed BJP concerns, demanding strict legal action.
Ongoing Tensions
While authorities insist the situation is controlled, Mothabari remains tense. Police continue investigations, promising impartial action while urging citizens to avoid inflammatory rhetoric.
As political blame games escalate, Malda’s Hindu community remains on edge, fearing further violence in what has become a recurring flashpoint in West Bengal.
