A teenage boy was apprehended by local residents while allegedly vandalizing Hindu statues at a family temple in Jangalpatti village under Gournadi upazila of Barishal district. The incident occurred around 12 PM on Wednesday, June 4. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gournadi Model Police Station, Md. Yunus Mia, confirmed the incident to the press.
According to local sources, the targeted temple is located within the residence of Ram Krishna De, a member of the Hindu minority community in Jangalpatti village. The temple housed two religious statues central to the family’s worship. Witnesses report that a teenage boy suddenly entered the premises at noon and began to destroy the statues. However, nearby residents noticed the commotion, quickly intervened, and caught the teenager as he attempted to flee. He was subsequently handed over to the police.
Police officials have stated that the detained boy is a resident of Bheemerpaar village, also located in the Gournadi upazila. His name and age have not yet been disclosed by authorities.
OC Yunus Mia told, “The boy is currently in police custody. A case is in process, and once it is filed, we will conduct a full investigation to determine whether this was an isolated act or if he was influenced or instigated by others.”
Law enforcement has indicated that, at this preliminary stage, the incident appears to be isolated. However, they have not ruled out the possibility of incitement or a larger, coordinated motive. Some locals have expressed suspicion that the act might have been planned or driven by a hidden agenda, though no concrete evidence has yet been found to support such claims.
Upon visiting the scene, it was observed that both statues had been partially damaged. Ram Krishna De and his family remain in a state of shock and fear following the attack. They have expressed concern that such incidents could contribute to a broader sense of insecurity among the local Hindu minority community.
