In a deeply disturbing incident that has sparked widespread public outrage, a college student was allegedly raped on a moving bus in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district. Following the incident, law enforcement authorities launched a joint operation that led to the arrest of the bus driver at the scene and his assistant the following day.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on Sunday night, June 15, when an eleventh-grade student from a Dhaka-based college was en route to her grandfather’s house in Baniachang, Nabiganj. She first traveled from Dhaka to Sylhet aboard a “Bilash Paribahan” bus. From Sherpur, she boarded a local bus operated by “Ma Enterprise” headed toward Nabiganj.
According to the case filed with police, after most of the passengers got off the bus in the Sherpur area, the driver, Sabbir Mia (25), and his assistant, Liton Mia (26), allegedly raped the girl in the moving vehicle. When the bus reached the Aushkandi area, the girl screamed for help. Hearing her cries, locals rushed to the scene and informed the army and police. The driver was detained around midnight and handed over to law enforcement. However, the assistant fled the scene.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
On the following morning (Monday), the survivor filed a rape case against both the driver and the helper at the Nabiganj police station. Habiganj Police Superintendent A.N.M. Sajedur Rahman later visited the scene and met the survivor at the hospital.
That same night, based on confidential intelligence, a joint team from RAB-9’s Sylhet Sadar Company and Shayestaganj Camp conducted a raid in Jalalpur area of South Surma in Sylhet and arrested the fugitive assistant, Liton Mia. He was handed over to Nabiganj Police Station on Tuesday morning.
Driver Sabbir Mia is a resident of Enatabad Banglabazar area in Nabiganj, while his assistant Liton Mia hails from Rashidpur village in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet.
Medical Care and Investigation
The survivor is currently receiving medical care at the 250-bed District Hospital in Habiganj. According to family members, she is in severe mental distress. Police have ensured that a medical examination is being conducted and are maintaining contact with her family for further support.

Speaking to the media, Habiganj Superintendent of Police A.N.M. Sajedur Rahman stated, “This is a tragic and shocking incident. We are treating the case with utmost seriousness and are working to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all accused. We are also providing necessary support to the survivor.”
