Police have recovered the mutilated, hand-bound, and decapitated body of a minority Awami League leader from a railway track in Dinajpur.
On the morning of February 18, Tuesday, the dismembered body of Bharat Chandra Roy, a 50-year-old local leader of the Awami League, was found near the Holidbari railway gate on the Parbatipur-Fulbari railway line in Dinajpur district.
Bharat Chandra Roy was a resident of Kalikapur Kumarpur village under Chandipur Union. He was the son of the late Santosh Chandra Roy and served as the organizational secretary of the Chandipur Union Awami League. His hands were tied with a nylon rope when his body was discovered.
Local residents suspect that he was either murdered before being placed on the tracks or was thrown onto the railway line while still alive. A train traveling from Dhaka to Parbatipur is believed to have run over him, severing his head from his body.
According to police sources, Bharat Chandra Roy was working on a contractual basis as a railway laborer in Parbatipur. His mobile phone had been switched off since the previous evening.
Early in the morning, locals spotted his lifeless body near the Holidbari railway gate in Parbatipur and immediately informed the police. Upon arrival, police discovered his body with its head severed and his hands still bound with a plastic rope.
Ripon Chandra, the victim’s younger son, stated, “My father worked as a railway laborer on a contractual basis and was the organizational secretary of the local Awami League. He left home in the morning and never returned. When he did not come back in the evening, we tried to call him, but his mobile was switched off. This morning, we received the news of a body found near the railway track. Upon reaching the site, we identified him.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Parbatipur Railway Police, Fakhrul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating, “The body was found on the railway track, severed by a train. His hands were tied. To determine the exact cause of death, we have sent the body to Dinajpur Medical College morgue for an autopsy.”
The gruesome discovery of Bharat Chandra Roy’s body has left the local minority community in shock and fear. His tragic death has raised concerns about the safety and security of minority political figures in the region. Many are questioning whether his murder was politically motivated or if there were other underlying reasons behind such a brutal act. The authorities must conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh.
