In Cox’s Bazar, a young man has been arrested by local police following allegations of harassment against an American woman. The incident occurred on Monday, March 10, 2025, around 10:00 AM on the road in front of the Hilldown Circuit House in the city. The accused, Tarequl Islam (24), was arrested within six and a half hours of the incident. Police sources revealed that Tarequl has prior allegations of harassment against him.
The victim, a 26-year-old American woman, works for an international organization in Cox’s Bazar. Her husband is also employed by the same organization. At the time of the incident, she was accompanied by a female colleague. Cox’s Bazar Police Superintendent Saifuddin Shahin confirmed the incident, stating that the victim provided details of the event via a short message.
According to the message, the American woman and her colleague were walking along Shahid Sarani in the city around 10:00 AM when they noticed a young man following them. Sensing danger, they stopped near the Hilldown Circuit House. The man approached them and began speaking to them. Suddenly, he grabbed the American woman from behind and touched her inappropriately before fleeing the scene.
In her message, the victim described the suspect as short in stature and wearing a yellow T-shirt.
Police Superintendent Saifuddin Shahin stated that law enforcement acted swiftly after the incident, leading to Tarequl Islam’s arrest within six and a half hours. Additional Police Superintendent (Traffic) Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, who is in charge of media relations at the Police Superintendent’s office, confirmed that Tarequl was apprehended from the Jhawtala area of Cox’s Bazar city around 4:30 PM.
Tarequl Islam, son of Faridul Alam, resides in Ward No. 10 of Cox’s Bazar city. He is locally known as “Chuilya Tareq” and has a prior harassment case filed against him at the Cox’s Bazar Model Police Station.
The Police Superintendent noted that the entire incident lasted only 10 seconds. After receiving the victim’s message, police launched an operation to apprehend the suspect, who was later identified by the victim.
Following his arrest, Tarequl Islam is being interrogated. Police have assured that strict legal action will be taken against him based on his previous record and the current allegations. Superintendent Saifuddin Shahin emphasized, “We have ensured the victim’s safety, and the investigation is proceeding swiftly.”
