The recovery of the partially decomposed body of a widow in Barishal’s Uzirpur municipality has triggered shock and alarm across the area. The victim, identified as Aleya Begum (60), was a mother of three and the wife of the late Nur-e-Alam Talukder. Her body was found on Thursday morning at around 10:30 AM inside her residence located on VIP Road, Ward No. 3 of Uzirpur municipality.
According to police, Aleya Begum’s decomposed body was found in a disturbing state — lying on the floor of the room, completely undressed, with an orna wrapped around her neck and a gamcha (local cloth) covering her face. The Officer-in-Charge of Uzirpur Model Police Station, Abdus Salam, confirmed that police acted swiftly upon receiving reports from locals. The decomposed body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Police stated that Aleya Begum lived alone in the house. Her only son, Mahtab Hossain, lives in Dhaka for work, while both of her married daughters reside with their in-laws. According to authorities, passersby noticed a strong, foul odor emanating from the house and, upon looking through the window, spotted the decomposed body. They immediately alerted neighbors, who in turn informed the police.
A neighbor, Afsana Begum, said that when she went looking for Aleya Begum around 10:30 AM on Thursday morning, she found the door ajar. Upon entering, she discovered Aleya Begum’s naked, decomposed body lying on the floor and screamed, attracting the attention of nearby residents, who quickly gathered and called the police.
Police suspect that the widow was strangled to death approximately two days ago and that she had been raped prior to the murder. Officer Abdus Salam stated that multiple police teams have been deployed to investigate the case and to identify the perpetrators. The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Uzirpur and Banaripara Circle, Ekramul Ahaad, visited the scene and instructed the police to expedite the investigation and apprehend those responsible.
The brutal nature of the crime and the discovery of the decomposed body have created an atmosphere of fear and tension throughout the area. Local residents have called for a thorough and speedy investigation and the prompt arrest of those responsible. Police have confirmed that preparations for filing a murder case are underway and stated that the investigation’s progress will be made public as soon as it is available.
