A retired community medical officer was publicly tied to a tree and beaten by a mob in Rajbari’s Baliakandi upazila following allegations of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. The incident took place around 12:30 PM on Sunday, June 16, in the Beruli Bazar area of Nawabpur Union, sparking widespread tension in the locality.
The victim has been identified as Doctor Ahmad Ali, a former community medical officer at the Nawabpur Union Sub-Health Center. He is a resident of the nearby Tekati village.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Jamal Uddin of Baliakandi Police Station, the incident began earlier in the day when Dr. Ahmad Ali was reportedly engaged in a conversation at a local tea stall. During the exchange, he allegedly made remarks about the Prophet Muhammad that some bystanders deemed offensive. Word of the alleged comment quickly spread throughout the area, inciting outrage among local residents.
By midday, a group of people detained Doctor Ahmad Ali, tied him to a tree in public, and proceeded to physically assault him. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the doctor was bound and beaten on the spot as tensions escalated rapidly.
The situation quickly deteriorated as news of the incident spread, causing panic and unrest in surrounding shops and roads. In response to the escalating tension, local authorities acted swiftly. Both Baliakandi police and a nearby military unit arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. Doctor Ahmad Ali was rescued from the mob and taken to a secure location.
OC Jamal Uddin stated, “We responded promptly, brought the situation under control, and ensured the safety of the individual involved. Law enforcement remains vigilant in the area.”
As of now, it is unclear whether any formal complaints have been filed or if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
