A disturbing case of sexual violence and alleged fraud has surfaced in Feni, Bangladesh, involving a foreign national. A Thai woman, originally of Indian descent, has filed a complaint accusing a Bangladeshi man of rape, assault, and financial deception. The case, now under investigation, raises concerns over the protection of foreign individuals in Bangladesh and broader issues of transnational exploitation.
Background: Romance Turned Nightmare
According to the complaint filed at the Feni Sadar Model Police Station, the 40-year-old woman, a citizen of Thailand and a business owner in Hong Kong since 2020, met Mokhsoodur Rahman (48), a resident of the Shorshodi Union in Feni, while running a grocery store in Hong Kong. Their relationship began as a romantic involvement, eventually evolving into a promise of marriage. They reportedly started a joint business venture and the woman provided Mokhsoodur with 210,000 Hong Kong dollars and gold ornaments to invest in both their business and to purchase land in Bangladesh.
Later, due to visa complications, Mokhsoodur was arrested and jailed in Hong Kong. The woman claims she supported him during his legal troubles and helped secure his release. After returning to Bangladesh, Mokhsoodur reportedly continued to maintain contact with her and introduced her to his relatives as his wife.
Alleged Assault and Betrayal
The woman stated that she visited Bangladesh on March 22, 2024, at Mokhsoodur’s request. On October 12 of the same year, she returned to Bangladesh, allegedly at his invitation again. During this visit, she claims Mokhsoodur raped her at his residence in Feni. Despite repeated discussions about marriage, no formal steps were taken.
Most recently, on April 13, 2025, she came back to Bangladesh to meet Mokhsoodur, but this time she was reportedly assaulted and forced out of his home. Her phone, which contained personal photos and sensitive data involving the accused, was also allegedly smashed.
Legal Action and Arrest
Following the incident, the woman filed a formal case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Mokhsoodur Rahman was arrested on April 14 from his home in Noabad Muslim Member Bhuiyan Bari in Feni and sent to jail via court order. Two unnamed individuals have also been listed as accused in the case.
The officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station, Md. Shamsuzzaman, confirmed the arrest and stated that the woman has undergone a medical examination at Feni General Hospital. Her judicial statement under Section 22 of the Criminal Procedure Code was recorded in court on April 15.
Transnational Trust and Human Rights Concerns
This case highlights the vulnerabilities foreign women may face when engaging in cross-border relationships. It reflects a pattern of emotional manipulation, financial fraud, and sexual violence under the guise of love and marriage—an exploitation of trust that transcends borders.
As per international norms, any allegation involving a foreign citizen, particularly in cases of sexual assault and financial fraud, must be dealt with utmost transparency and seriousness. The accused’s alleged actions, if proven true, not only violate the victim’s fundamental rights but could also damage Bangladesh’s international reputation.
