Incident Overview

The incident began on the night of Saturday, June 28, when Md. Rubel—a hotel worker based in Dhaka—responded to a call from his third wife, Jharna Begum, and traveled to the Kamarpatti area in Tajumuddin, Bhola. Upon arrival, Rubel was ambushed by a group of men who demanded BDT 400,000 to 500,000 (approximately USD 3,500–4,500) as extortion. When he refused, he was brutally beaten with iron rods, hammers, and metal pipes throughout the night.

Unable to pay the demanded amount, Rubel’s attackers forced him to call his first wife, asking her to bring money. She arrived at the scene around 11 AM on Sunday, June 29, carrying only BDT 10,000. Enraged, the attackers reportedly beat Rubel again in front of her and pressured her for more money. Eventually, they reduced the demand to BDT 100,000.

The first wife called Rubel’s father-in-law to arrange the money. While they were waiting for the funds, the perpetrators took Rubel outside under the pretense of having tea, leaving the housewife alone. It was then, according to the complaint, that the housewife was gang-raped inside the house by multiple men in succession.
