Across Bangladesh, incidents of rape and attempted rape have been on a relentless rise, shedding light on a dark facet of human rights violations. Recently, five cases of rape and five attempts of rape have been reported across eight districts, including Kurigram, Bogura, Cumilla, Rajshahi, Lakshmipur, and Sirajganj. Police have arrested six individuals in connection with these crimes. However, the most harrowing incident occurred in Kurigram’s Rajarhat upazila, where a minor girl was abducted and held captive for 18 days while being subjected to repeated sexual assault.
The Horrific Incident in Kurigram
In Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram, a minor girl from the village of Majhi Sultan Mahmud in Gharialdanga Union was abducted on March 2. Fazlul Haque (48), a resident of Chargokunda village in Gokunda Union, Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, Kurigram District allegedly kidnapped the girl and held her captive for 18 days. During this period, she was repeatedly raped, and the assault was recorded on video. The perpetrators threatened to release the footage online if she disclosed the crime to anyone.
The survivor revealed that Fazlul Haque and his wife had been pressuring her to engage in immoral activities for a long time. When she refused, they abducted her. She stated, “They forced me into this and recorded videos. They threatened to leak the footage if I told anyone. I demand justice for what they did to me.”
On Thursday, a team from the Kurigram Camp Army conducted a rescue operation and handed the survivor over to police custody. Fazlul Haque was arrested during the joint operation by the army and police.
Sister Raped by Brother in Bogura
In Bogura’s Dhunot upazila, a newlywed minor girl was allegedly raped by her elder brother, Sujan Mondal. The victim’s mother filed a case against her son, and police arrested Sujan on Wednesday night. Sujan is a resident of Chuniyapara Ashrayan Palli in Goshaibari Union.
Uncle Accused of Raping Niece in Cumilla
In Chandina, Cumilla, an 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her uncle, Abu Saeed (21). The accused reportedly lured the madrasa student with money and sexually assaulted her for over a year. The victim’s mother filed a case at Chandina Police Station.
Eight-Year-Old Raped in Rajshahi
In Bagha, Rajshahi, a fourth-grade student was allegedly raped by Joy Hossain (18). The incident occurred in Chakchhatari village when the accused found the girl alone at home. A case has been filed at the local police station.
Attempted Rape in Nabinagar: Mob Justice
In Nabinagar, a 25-year-old man named Abdul Khaled was beaten by a mob for attempting to rape a seven-year-old girl. He was later handed over to the police.
Muezzin Arrested in Mymensingh
In Mymensingh’s Gafargaon, a 26-year-old muezzin, Hayatul Islam, was arrested for attempting to rape a child. He was apprehended from Fulpur Health Complex and later produced in court.
Two Arrested for Attempted Rape in Lakshmipur
In Lakshmipur, two separate incidents of attempted rape involving six-year-old girls were reported. Monir Hossain and Ripon Hossain were arrested and sent to jail by court order.
Madrasa Student Detained in Sirajganj
In Tarash, Sirajganj, a 12-year-old madrasa student was detained for attempting to rape a child. The accused is a seventh-grade student at Arangail Dakhil Madrasa.
Elderly Man Arrested in Belkuchi
In Belkuchi, Sirajganj, a 65-year-old man, Haji Abdus Salam, was arrested for attempting to rape a nine-year-old madrasa student. The incident occurred in Kamarpara area.
A Disturbing Pattern of Human Rights Violations
These incidents specially the incident of Kurigram paint a grim picture of the state of women’s and children’s rights in Bangladesh. Rape and attempted rape are not only crimes against individuals but also a violation of fundamental human rights.
