A horrific gang rape has taken place in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila. In the early hours of Friday (July 4), a 28-year-old mother was sexually assaulted by a group of men who held a knife to the throat of her two-year-old child. The victim has alleged that she is now being pressured into an out-of-court settlement to prevent her from seeking justice.
Details of the Incident
The victim, a resident of Jute Mill area in Boda Upazila’s Moynandighi Union, was traveling by easy-bike to her father’s house in Sadar Upazila with her sick child. Around three miles into the journey, near Surivita area, a known youth named Johnny Islam called out to her from another easy-bike. When she stopped, Johnny and five others forcibly dragged her into a nearby tea garden. There, they held a knife to her child’s throat and took turns raping her.
The victim stated, “When I screamed, they pressed the knife against my child’s neck. I was completely helpless. All six of them raped me—four were known to me, while the other two were strangers.” At one point, she lost consciousness. The perpetrators later abandoned her and the child by the roadside before fleeing.
Police Response and Arrests
Locals alerted the police via the national emergency helpline (999), and officers arrived at the scene around 1 AM, rescuing the mother and child. They were admitted to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital.
On Saturday (July 5), the victim filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Panchagarh Sadar Police Station. The complaint named four known suspects, along with two unidentified individuals.
Police have since arrested four suspects:
Johnny Islam (27), Jagdal Bazar. Biplob Hossain (25), Jagdal Bazar. Mokshedul Islam (33), Jagdal Bazar. Sadek Islam (28), Boda
Authorities confirmed that operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Medical and Legal Proceedings
Dr. Abul Kashem, the hospital’s resident physician, reported that the victim’s condition is stable, but medical examinations are being conducted to gather forensic evidence.
“Abdullah Hil Zaman”, the acting officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, stated, “Once the victim regained consciousness, she provided detailed testimony. Based on her statement and evidence, a case has been filed. Strict legal action will be taken against the perpetrators.”
Community Outrage and Demand for Justice
The incident has sparked outrage among locals. The victim’s family has appealed for justice, with her elder brother stating, “My sister bears clear signs of assault. We demand justice to ensure such brutality is never repeated.”
