A disturbing incident of violent mob assault has been reported from Fatikchhari in Chattogram, where three teenagers were tied to a bridge railing and beaten throughout the night on suspicion of theft. One of them, 15-year-old seventh grader Rihan Uddin Mahin, died at the scene. His two friends—Manik and Rahat—were severely injured and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The incident occurred early Friday morning near the Cheingar Bridge, adjacent to the Sakar Ali Talukderbari area of Kanchannagar Union under Fatikchhari Upazila. Mahin was the only son of local grocery shop owner Muhammad Lokman. He studied in the seventh grade at Kanchannagar High School. According to the family, Mahin’s father was also beaten when he arrived at the scene to rescue his son.

Sequence of Events

According to accounts from local residents, Mahin and his two friends were returning home from Chattogram city late Thursday night. At around 3 a.m., when they arrived in the area by a CNG-run autorickshaw, a group of seven to eight youths lying in wait allegedly chased them, suspecting them of theft.

Seeking safety, the three teenagers climbed onto the roof of a nearby under-construction building belonging to Hafez Bakhtiar. However, the attackers reached the site, forced them down from the roof, and dragged them to Cheingar Bridge. There, they tied the boys with ropes to the railing and beat them for hours throughout the night.

Family members say that when the gravely injured Mahin asked for water, the attackers prevented anyone from giving it to him. Mahin’s father was also assaulted when he tried to intervene.

Statements from Family and Witnesses

Mahin’s aunt, Sukhi Begum, said the assailants beat the boy in front of his family and refused to give him water despite his pleas.

Mobarak, the owner of the house where the boys briefly took shelter, stated that no theft had occurred there. He said he woke up to noise and saw several people forcibly taking the boys away.

Local residents shared another account, stating that a few teenagers were standing on a road near Talukderbari around 3:30 a.m. Seeing them, several locals suspected them of being thieves and chased them. Three of them fled to the rooftop of the under-construction building, from where they were later brought down and assaulted on the bridge.

Mahin’s parents rushed to the spot and attempted to save their son, but they were unable to intervene. His father sustained serious injuries.

Kanchannagar Union Parishad member Abdul Kader Chowdhury stated that based on what he learned locally, such punishment based on suspicion is unlawful.

Police Information

Fatikchhari Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Ahmad said officers reached the scene around 6 a.m. and found the three teenagers tied to the bridge railing. Mahin had already died by then. Manik and Rahat were sent to the hospital for treatment.

According to the OC, initial conversations with the victim’s family suggest that the incident may not be a simple case of mob violence. Because the attackers are from the same village, the possibility of previous conflicts is also being investigated.

Police detained a man named Noman for questioning shortly after the incident, and later arrested another individual named Azad. Efforts to apprehend others involved are ongoing.
