In a shocking incident, an eight-year-old mentally disabled girl was allegedly raped by a postmaster in Babulia Post Office under Agardari Union of Satkhira Sadar Upazila, lured with just 10 taka. The accused, Postmaster Sheikh Shahidul Islam (55), was detained by locals and handed over to law enforcement. The incident occurred on Sunday (August 3) afternoon.
According to police and local sources, the child is the daughter of her mother’s first husband. After her parents’ separation, her mother remarried in the neighboring Bashghata village. Since the girl’s father lives in Babulia village, she frequently passes by the post office while visiting her mother. On Sunday morning, while on her way to see her mother, the postmaster allegedly lured her inside the office with the promise of 10 taka in exchange for organizing some documents. He then reportedly locked the door and raped her.
When locals noticed the incident, they broke open the door and rescued the girl. The accused postmaster was detained, and the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were informed. RAB members later rescued the victim, admitted her to Satkhira Sadar Hospital, and took Shahidul Islam into custody.
Post office peon Ashraf Ali stated that when he returned after lunch, he saw an agitated crowd holding the postmaster captive before police and RAB took him away. Local village police member Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that law enforcement was immediately notified.
The victim’s mother filed a complaint, stating that her daughter often stays with relatives due to their financial struggles. She claimed that on Sunday morning, the postmaster offered her daughter 10 taka to arrange papers and then raped her while asking her to clean the room.
However, the accused, Shahidul Islam, denied the allegations, claiming he only gave the girl 10 taka to clean accumulated dirt and papers in preparation for a senior officer’s visit. He insisted he never touched her and said medical tests would prove his innocence.
A local witness (requesting anonymity) said that as soon as the postmaster was brought out, a mob began beating him in front of the police, who then quickly escorted him to the station with a helmet on his head for protection.
Dr. Dalia Akter from Satkhira Sadar Hospital’s emergency department said no eight-year-old rape victim was admitted or received primary treatment between 12 PM and 8:30 PM on Sunday.
Satkhira Sadar Police Station’s Investigation Officer, Inspector Md. Shafiqul Islam, said locals handed over the postmaster around 12:30 PM, and the victim was advised hospital admission by 1 PM. The mother filed a case under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act (Amended 2003). The accused will be produced in court on Monday.
Authorities confirm the investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will follow based on evidence and formal complaints.
