Prominent former Muslim activist, YouTuber, and human rights commentator Saleem Wastik is currently receiving treatment in hospital in critical condition following a violent attack at his residence. The incident has raised serious questions regarding motive, accountability, and the adequacy and legality of the state’s response, with investigations still ongoing.
The attack took place in Ashok Vihar Colony of the Loni area in Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh. According to eyewitness accounts, on Friday morning two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle and entered the office attached to Saleem Wastik’s home. The assailants were wearing helmets and reportedly did not engage in any conversation before launching the attack. Using a sharp weapon, they stabbed Wastik multiple times in the neck and abdomen.Saleem Wastik collapsed on the floor due to heavy blood loss.
Local residents immediately alerted the police. Wastik was first taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB Hospital) in Delhi for advanced medical care. Doctors treating him have stated that his condition remains critical and that he continues to fight for his life.
Saleem Wastik is a well-known former Muslim (ex-Muslim) activist and digital content creator. Through YouTube, podcasts, and social media platforms, he has for years openly discussed and critically examined various social and religious practices within Islam. His content has addressed issues such as the madrasa education system, women’s rights, triple talaq, halal practices, and what he describes as religious superstitions. He operates two YouTube channels, with a combined total of approximately 179 videos and an estimated 28,000 to 30,000 subscribers. After leaving Islam, Wastik publicly shared his personal experiences and the reasons behind his decision, which earned him both support and strong criticism.
Following the attack, Saleem Wastik’s family described the incident as a premeditated attempt on his life. His son, Usman, told the media that the assault was neither random nor spontaneous. Members of his close circle and some supporters believe that his outspoken views may have drawn hostility from extremist elements. However, law enforcement authorities have not officially confirmed any motive behind the attack.
The investigation is being led by the local Loni Police Station, which has been reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Police sources indicated that the names of five to six individuals emerged during the investigation, with a man identified as Zeeshan named as the prime suspect. According to police statements, when officers attempted to arrest him during an operation on Sunday morning near the Nithora underpass, he allegedly tried to flee and opened fire. Police responded with return fire, and Zeeshan was killed at the scene. Authorities reported the recovery of a motorcycle, a firearm, and ammunition. No police personnel were reported injured in the encounter.
The case gained further attention after it emerged that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was briefed on the incident soon after it occurred and issued instructions for the swift arrest of those responsible and for strict legal action.
As of now, Saleem Wastik remains hospitalized at GTB Hospital in Delhi. Until his condition stabilizes and the investigation progresses further, several aspects of the case remain unresolved. The attack, the subsequent police encounter, and unanswered questions about motive and networks potentially involved have collectively raised serious concerns regarding freedom of expression, personal security, and the broader human rights environment.
