In Sitakunda, Chattogram, blogger and human rights activist Asad Noor’s birthday post has sparked controversy, leading to blasphemy allegations against a Hindu youth. On Saturday (August 9) afternoon, members of the local Muslim Tawhidi group accused the youth, identified as Bijoy Debnath, of sharing the post on social media. He was subsequently beaten and handed over to the police.
According to local sources, Bijoy Debnath runs a computer shop in the Sitakunda Bazar area. The allegation states that he posted an Instagram story on the occasion of Asad Noor’s birthday. In that post, he wrote, , “Happy birthday, Asad Noor. A fearless soldier who can always speak the truth and what is right.” Some local individuals claimed the post was blasphemous and reacted strongly. It is reported that Bijoy Debnath is a resident of Premtola in Sitakunda.
On Saturday afternoon, a group of youths allegedly pulled Bijoy Debnath out of his shop, assaulted him, and took him to Sitakunda Model Police Station. Witnesses reported hearing some of the attackers saying that because Bijoy Debnath was “promoting” Asad Noor, they had beaten him and handed him over to the police, urging the authorities to ensure the “maximum punishment” for him.
Some of those who handed him over to the police also made comments about the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), stating, “ISKCON will have no place in Bengal, and no place in Sitakunda.” Later in the afternoon, ISKCON-opposing slogans were chanted in the Sitakunda Bazar area, creating further tension.
As of Saturday evening, the police had not made any comment on whether any case had been filed against Bijoy Debnath or if he had been formally shown as arrested.
